5K = No Problem!

If you've been following my running updates, you will know that I've only been going a mile. It's been the "just get up and do SOMETHING" mentality versus really trying to start running any significant distance.

Back in the day, our Thanksgiving family tradition usually included the Turkey Trot. The last time I did it was in 2003, and my dad and I did the 8-mile race. As previously noted, I thought I was going to die. I did it cold turkey (no pun intended) - hadn't really run in several years before we did it. The deal was that I would run the 8-mile with him before I graduated college. It was a promise to my dad, so I kept that promise. It was also a promise I wished he had forgotten about. I couldn't walk for 3 days. I did it though. By far the longest I had ever, and still HAVE ever run.

Anyways, so my recent running stint was only a mile. We were signed up for the 5K, which is a little over 3 miles. If you've ever done the Turkey Trot, you know the first 1/2 mile is pretty much walking since there are over 30,000 people there. The Dallas Morning News estimated 38,000 this year.

Long story short, this was easy. I felt good. I felt really good. I seriously contemplated going to the right for 8-mile instead of the left for the 5K. My dad did too, except we didn't have enough money in the parking meter. Plus, I'm not sure if you are supposed to do that.

It must have been the "mass crowd" affect or something. It's a lot easier to do things when you are with a bunch of other people doing it too. At about the 2.5-mile mark, Andrew started picking up the pace in a racing sort of way. I sensed he was trying to race a little, so I picked up the pace too. We were pretty much in a dead sprint by the last stretch. I cut over quickly and blocked him out with a "big, fat man" and ended up finishing first. He "claims" I blocked him out... I certainly didn't do it on purpose. The whole race was somewhat of an obstacle course because of all the people (and strollers and dogs).

Not that we were really "racing", but I did WIN among our family! hehe
I'm pretty sure that my Dad, brother, or Andrew could have "won" if they really wanted to. My dad does run 5 miles 3 times a week... pretty good for a 60-year old man!!!

I can certainly say that I like running with a group WAY better than doing it on my own. I liked that "race" factor. For some reason, running is not a sport/activity that I can really push myself on my own. I NEED someone there to beat or at least keep up with.

So, anyways, it was fun. I'm going to keep my eye out for some local 5K's or even something a little longer, like 5 miles. I'm not sure when we'll be in Dallas on Thanksgiving again, but I'd definitely like to do the 8-mile again someday. Someday when I've actually trained for it.

Oh, and we were going to bring Carson, but since he'd been under the weather, we figured it was probably best to not take him out in the cold with masses of people. THAT was a good decision. He stayed home with my mom and "helped" her prepare our Thanksgiving feast. The Turkey Trot was most definitely a BOB-fest! (Note: A BOB is an all-terrain/jogging stroller for you non-young kiddo types.)

That Wasn't Too Bad...

As expected, most of my problem is mental.

I did it. I ran a mile. A whole mile.

I didn't think I'd be able to go the whole way without stopping, but I did. I kept a very slow and steady pace. My speed was the same the whole way, and I finished in 9 minutes, 15 seconds. It's not a great time, but that's not what mattered. What mattered first was that I got my butt out of the chair and went. What mattered second was that I didn't wimp out and actually ran the whole thing. I wasn't dying, so I just kept telling myself that HOME was the goal, NOT just the next stop sign, although each stop sign was a little "okay, you're getting there" moment. My goal was simply to run as far as I could (up to a mile) without stopping. I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it...it felt good. I walked another 1/2 mile or so and then came in and did some stretching/strength stuff.

Baby steps... if I can get in the habit of doing this at least 3 times a week, that will be a great start! If I can try to beat my time just a little bit each time, that will really motivate me. I like to see results!

The Quest for the 8-Minute Mile...

Okay, I'm not a runner. Never really have been, at least not a 'distance' runner. The only time I can kind of claim being a runner was in elementary school. I had one of the fastest mile times back then {probably just because I had so much dang energy}. I was a sprinter. Actually, a hurdler. I also danced and played basketball. I had my days as a softball player, gymnast, cheerleader/mascot, and brief stint as a soccer player. I honestly contemplated playing football in junior high. Wouldn't that have been hilarious? Go Chargers! Point being...I considered myself an athlete pretty much until college. THAT'S the kind of "working out" I enjoyed. Sports were fun. It wasn't work. It was hard, but it was fun. I played racquetball a lot in college (which I LOVED) and rode my bike, but only "occasionally" ran and worked out. It's a shame I didn't take better advantage of it because A&M probably has one of the most amazing Student Rec centers in the country.

I'm lazy. I admit it. I'm lazy, at least when it comes to working out. I just don't like working out. I know I always feel better afterwards, but I just CAN'T seem to START. I hate doing DVD's in the living room. I'm too cheap to pay to go to the gym {even though classes are the only thing I ever really liked}. As mentioned above, I'm not distance runner. I know it's an excuse, but I seriously get major pain in my hip {bursitis, I think that's what the doc called it one time} and knees {in addition to just not being able to breathe}. I do like the run/walk thing, especially with Carson. I like to run a block, then walk a block. I can go a lot farther that way. It's finally not so hot, where getting up SUPER early was your only option. Still, I just can't seem to make time {mostly mentally} to work out.

Anyways, I can honestly say that I probably couldn't even run a full mile now. I just busted out Google Earth and mapped a 1 mile route in my neighborhood. Either today or tomorrow, I'm going to give it a try....AND time myself. Knowing that I will likely have to take a breather or two (oh lordy, hopefully not more than that), I'm thinking it will probably take me 10-12 minutes. How sad is that?

Stupid me, since we're going to be in Dallas on Thanksgiving this year for the first time in like 6 years, suggested we do the Turkey Trot as a family. We used to do it all the time. The last time I did it was when I was a senior in college. I made a promise to my dad that before I graduated, I would run the 8-mile with him instead of our usual 3-mile...you know, because I was going to go to A&M and take advantage of that great Rec Center and run/work out all the time. As mentioned above, that didn't happen. I kept my word and ran it with him, but it almost killed me. I wasn't about to let two 50-something year old men (my dad and his running buddy) show me up (which they did anyway) and wimp out. I still don't know how I did it. I couldn't walk for 3 days I was so sore. The bursitis in my hip really flared up too...SO painful.

I need to thank God everyday that {at least so far} I was blessed with my dad's genes of high metabolism and married someone who cooks healthy food. If it weren't for those two things, I have a feeling I would be WAY overweight right now.

What drives me crazy is when I talk about needing to work out and people say "No you don't, you're skinny." I thankfully have always been relatively trim; however, being trim doesn't mean you're in good shape. It's pathetic that I'm about to be 30 this month and get winded running one block. No wonder labor really was LABOR. I had ZERO endurance.

I can honestly say that I really haven't had a regular work out routine since high school... and back then it was dancing, so it was fun. The summer of July 2009, Andrew & I did do P-90X, but I skipped out on the last 30 days because of a long business trip. I also probably wasn't really "bringing it" the way you're supposed to. Yeah, I was the one that would leave gymnastics early and skip conditioning because "my mom is already here." So lazy.

I'm hoping that with some Pinterest motivation, maybe I can get my booty up out of the chair! I know that if I make it a competition with myself, I'll be more likely to try harder.

KEEP GOING!!!! (At least once I start!)

I Wish I Looked Like This!!!

Oh Wait...

This is what I really struggle with....

Just Start!!!

Okay, someone check back with me an a week or two and hold me accountable...
