Make Ya Smile Monday...shoes & shirt not required

Sunday was beautiful! It was pretty chilly in the morning, so we had Carson in his adorable alligator sweater for church, but by mid-afternoon, it was warming up and direct sunlight was actually a little on the hot side.

32 Weeks Old!

Andrew spent the afternoon working on his garden, and since it was so beautiful, we went and joined him on a blanket in the backyard. As I mentioned above, it got pretty toasty in the direct sun, so Carson's shirt came off for a little while. Let's face it, he could use a tan! :-) (Kidding, we are sunscreen nuts at our house.)

Look at that precious, perfect skin!

This kids just loves to be outside. He also loves to be naked. So to be outside and half naked was pretty fun. I gave his new sunglasses a try, but his face is a little too round (which makes it extra kissable!). Good thing I kept the receipt. They will be going back to Target this week. :-)

About time!

Carson FINALLY decided he wanted to roll from his back to tummy. Even at his 6-month checkup, the doc was a little surprised to hear he hadn't done that yet. I had to remind the doc that Carson H.A.T.E.S. tummy time (it is getting better though). Why in the world would he purposely roll onto his tummy when he hates being there? He's been rolling from back to tummy forever. He actually did that the first time really early according to the development charts, but he was really late on the other way. He's sitting independently like a champ, which to me is way more important. As my friend Courtney said, "Have you ever seen an adult that can't roll over." :-) It never bothered me.

He actually did it the first time when we weren't looking. I put him on his back on a blanket in the living room for a couple minutes while I ran into the kitchen. When I went back in, he was on his tummy. He was trying to get his airplane toy. He did it one more time later in the afternoon. Yay! He finally can roll both ways!

I am forcing more tummy time these days, and he's not fighting it as bad as he used to. By fighting it, I mean immediately flipping over to his back. When he is on his tummy and sees a toy he wants, his legs start going. He's able to scoot forward a little bit. I tell ya, this kid can reach though. He can really stretch out to try to get something he wants. Remotes are still a favorite "toy", so mommy found an old remote, took out the batteries and washed it off. Perfect toy!

Not-So-Normal Naptime...

Is there some kind of growth spurt that happens around 7 months??? I don't know what's causing it, but my precious little non-napper has been having "long" naps the last few days. For anyone that's been following for a while, you know that this little guy usually has three, 20-30 minute naps a day. That's it. He's been going down relatively easy for a while, but like clockwork, after 30 minutes those big blue eyes just pop open. He sleeps almost 12 hours straight at night, so the doctor wasn't concerned. I mean, you can't force a child to fall asleep.

Anyways, this week he has surprised us a few times. Monday he took a (nearly) 2-hour nap, 1-hour nap, and a 30 minute nap. A couple of other times during the week, one of his naps was 1-1.5 hours. Yesterday I know he had at least one nap that was 1.5 hours. Right now, he's just about to hit the hour and a half mark!

Here's my precious angel sleeping now... :-)

I also find it a little strange that his longest nap is often the one right after breakfast. All my little baby growth/development e-mails I get every week or month have been saying that many babies drop their morning nap and only have the late morning/after lunch and then mid/late afternoon naps. [At least I think that's right, I forget.] This child is practically falling asleep at breakfast some days. You'd think after sleeping 12 hours, he'd be good to go for a while. But around 9:00am, his body language is practically begging me to just get a bottle and hit the crib. So, that's what we do.

I'm hoping that this isn't just a fluke phase. It would be really nice to have a child with legitimate naps during the day. Let's face it moms, 20-30 minutes just doesn't cut it when we have stuff to do. :-)

Houston, we have a problem...

It appears someone is (just about) longer than their changing table pad. (Notice in the picture his knees are bent.) It doesn't help that our little wiggle worm wiggles his head off the back end just about every time. I had to move the basket of changing table goodies to the other end because he kept trying to roll over and grab anything he could get his hands on. I don't have problem changing him on the floor, but I know getting up and down for some people may not be as easy. I measured our pad and it's 31"...the longest I've seen that they make is 34". Why do they make them so short? Aren't babies in diapers until at least 2 in most cases? (Speaking of, when does the whole potty training thing start? I'm clueless.) I did see some Puppy Wee Wee Pads for housebreaking that were 36"... maybe I should just get those. :-)

7 Months!

Carson turned 7 months on February 22nd! It's still hard to believe he is closer to his 1st birthday than when he was born.

So what's he doing these days...

Mostly being ridiculously cute!!! I LOVE this age!!! He's developing this little personality and a smile that could brighten the darkest room! His little laugh just makes any negative thing on your mind go away.

He grabs at everything and has gotten so good with this hands. I bought some little snacks that I break up for him and have noticed the "pincher" reflex... using his pointer and thumb to try to pick up little things. A few times he's actually picked it up and gotten it in his mouth. We're working on it. He's getting the hang of one of the sippy cups; however, I think he mostly enjoys just chewing on the spout. I have tried without the lid and he seems to like it that way too.

He is definitely an independent sitter. I am still just amazed how quickly he went from falling over after a few seconds to pretty much never falling over. He likes to sit and play with a pile of toys.

The last couple days we have gone outside and he LOVES it. He experienced grass on his toes for the first time last weekend and was fascinated. I had to be careful, he almost ate a stick that was in the lawn. He watches the birds or just happy to watch mommy and daddy working in the yard/garden.

He recognizes people in person and in pictures and gets excited when he sees someone he knows. He definitely knows me and Andrew, Wannie & Papi, and his nanny Jill. It takes him a few minutes, but he quickly realizes he knows my parents and Uncle Dave. I'm pretty sure he recognizes Auntie Amanda, but I just haven't been able to test it recently. I think he remembers the ladies in the nursery at church too. He sees them once a week. We did have our first bout with separation anxiety at church last Sunday. He cried for the first time when we left him. I think he might have been just tired and hungry because they said he passed out pretty quickly after the bottle. He was sleeping soundly in the crib when we got out of mass.

He loves the dogs, especially Lucy (and she loves him). She might love him a little too much. When he's in the jumper, she's started "grooming" his feet. At first he laughed when she was just licking, then she started to do the "monkey grooming" thing that she does to Shooter and started nipping at his feet. He did NOT like that.

Kisses from Shooter

He finds Daddy way funnier than Mommy. He LOVES music and loves to watch Andrew play guitar. He also loves to shake his little music toys from his cousins. I think we will be taking the next Kindermusik session this spring. I know he will love it!

He still (sometimes) nurses twice a day in the morning or at night which makes Mommy happy. At night he is usually game to nurse, but lately morning hasn't been too successful. I wish he was more interested, but he just doesn't want to sit still for that long. If he's really tired or doesn't feel good, he'll nurse. Otherwise, it seems like he just wants a bottle. He still is getting breast milk most of the time during the day... thank goodness for awesome pumps!

He loves his Exersaucer and can entertain himself. He LOVES to bounce in his door jumper. He also has been "walking" around the kitchen in his walker... mostly backwards though.

He is fascinated by running water. He leans over to look down the drain to try to figure out where it's going. He also gets frustrated that he can't grab the water coming out of the faucet. He pretty much just loves bath time. The new bath location in the sink has been at hit!

He loves to make diaper changes challenging by rolling around and reaching for things behind him. He likes to clap his feet when laying on his back.

He sleeps great at night ~7:00pm - ~6:30am. He wakes up just as happy as can be. He usually wakes up and plays in his crib for a good while in the morning. YAY! Mommy gets to sleep a little longer!

Nap time has become much more successful. He's falling asleep on his own pretty easily these days. The key is to put him down as soon as he acts tired. This kid will get a second wind that is very convincing if you miss that sleepy window. Naps still aren't that long, but he usually takes three, 30 minute naps a day. Occasionally, he'll sleep 45 minutes to an hour, but then one of the others will likely only be 20-25 minutes.

He's been "talking" up a storm lately...see my recent post about a whole bunch of Jibberish. It's so cute though! It's so fun to watch him discover new sounds.

He's still eating like a champ. He usually has some milk in the morning a little after he wakes up. Breakfast around 8:30 with consists of oatmeal or a fruit granola mix, and then another fruit. Not long after breakfast he takes a small bottle then naps. He might want another small bottle mid/late morning. Lunch is usually around 12:30 and consists of either oatmeal and a fruit or veggie or just a fruit and veggie. A solid lunch is iffy. Some days he scarfs it down, others he just wants a big bottle. If he did eat solids, he usually takes a small bottle before his nap. He has a bottle again late afternoon before his nap. Dinner is at 6:00 and usually consists of oatmeal, veggie, and fruit for dessert. He usually wants more too! I hold off though because he gets a small bottle or nurses right before bed.

He's in pretty much all 12 month clothes (and they're getting snug), and some 18 month.

And that's that! We are LOVING life with our precious, not so little 7 month old!

Were You Raised in a Barn???

I know Andrew has said that to me a number of times, especially when it came to classic 1980's movies..."How have you never seen Goonies??? Were you raised in a barn???"

Anyways, I'm starting to think some people really might have been, especially those that want to watch my child. I have been BLOWN AWAY by the lack of professionalism, courtesy, and pure sloppiness of some people. So, please forgive me for this post, but I need to vent.

If you really want a job, you'd think that a normal person would go out of their way to make a good impression. You know the phrase, "You never have a second chance to make a first impression." That is SOOOOO true, and I wish people understood the importance of it. I know I always have. Maybe that's just how I was raised. From a young age, my dad taught me to have a firm handshake and to look people in the eye. In junior high and high school, my mom sat there and counted the number of "likes" on her hand that I would say in a sentence in an effort to teach me to speak like an educated person and not a sloppy teen. As my current nanny said, so many people these days just lack "polish". Isn't that the truth?!?! [Don't get me started on the people who let their kids come to church looking like they just rolled out of bed. I know God doesn't care what you look like, but I believe it's all about respect and reverence.]

Blame it on text messaging, or maybe it's just laziness, but either way, when you are responding to an ad for employment, act like you care! I got so many responses with no capital letters, 6 lines of text with no period, misspelled words, and "sentences" that didn't even make any sense. How am I supposed to take you seriously, when you don't appear to be serious? I don't mean to generalize here, but your name was not Juanita or Maria, I am 99.9% sure that English is your first language. I don't expect perfection, because I know I mess up all the time. My grammar is far from perfect, but I just expect that you make your best effort to give off a good impression, that you might have re-read what your wrote before you hit "Send".

Some of you that are on Facebook probably saw my post about the girl that called asking if I wanted someone with experience. When I said "Yes, preferably", her response was that she was that she didn't have any but was "a natural." Further, she said "You see, I work at Pizza Hut and all the kids come and hug me. They love me." Of course, I'm trying not to laugh because I can't believe that someone would actually say that and think that seriously makes them qualified to care for an infant. She was serious though. She didn't seem to understand why I didn't think that "having the kids love her" was good enough experience.

Today might have been the icing on the cake. Sunday night I circled back with a lady I had several e-mail exchanges with to set up an interview. She was supposed to come to my house today at noon. Well, by 12:45pm she still wasn't here. I called and left a message. I still haven't heard from her. Not that I wish anything bad on this woman, but I sure hope there was some kind of emergency that kept her from coming, and that she really isn't that flaky. I mean, if you don't want the job or can't interview today, just tell me. I guess it's better that I find out now she's not reliable. I just really don't appreciate people wasting my time.

Stepping down from my soapbox now...

A Whole Bunch of Jibberish...

One of my favorite things about this age is all the "talking." Of course, none of it makes any sense, but all those sweet sounds are just precious. Carson still doesn't say "Ma Ma" or "Da Da", but he has made the "Muh" and "Buh" sounds. He's just gotten the "Guh" sound too. This morning, Andrew and I just laid in bed staring at the monitor laughing at all Carson had to say. He was just talking up a storm with "Goo goo and gah gah" sounds and a whole other slew of thing we really hadn't heard before. I'll have to get some on video and post here soon.

He was probably "telling" me something here...

Spitting/Blowing Bubbles, another favorite activity (especially with a mouthful of food)
