Baby Signing?

My weekly BabyCenter e-mail had an article about baby signing. I've been interested, but haven't really done any research yet.

Has anybody done this with their child? Do you recommend it? What resources did you use? What's the best way to get started?

  1. Emily! We love baby sign language! I never did the "Baby Signing Times" DVD's like a lot of people have (they are $$!), but I did get her a Baby Einstein "My First Signs" DVD and she picked it up, and we also do it to her. She is still very vocal (and loud like her mama :) ), but the signs help for her to tell me she's wanting to eat, wants more, or is all done. She doesnt know many signs, but it def helps!! and is also pretty stinking cute. :)

Every baby is different and I know a lot of people are concerned that signing would actually delay speaking but we have found that it actually helps. I just try and always say the word when she signs the sign and now she says it too. I know a lot of people love those Baby Signing TImes series, but I just wanted her to know a few things, not a whole language...and it has helped a lot with our communication!!

Let me know if you have any questions! Just remember he will do things in his own time and that it may not be for him...or he may use it all the time!! :) Love to you friend!!

  2. We LOVE baby signs!! I bought a few books demonstrating different signs, but other than that we have just self taught. Jay signs "more" when he wants it- food, water, bubbles, getting tossed in the air- he definitely gets it! He also recognizes my signs for other things- he just can't do them quite yet. Email me if you have questions or want more info. I've seen lots of recent research therefore it won't help or hinder language development- it's just a way for them to communicate now! So fun!

  3. We used baby signing with our last two babies! It wasn't extensive... up, all done/finished, hungry, more, please, milk, and juice. It was fun to see them communicate more clearly than with just noises. And less stressful too! Definitely give it a try!
